Thick, nutritive soup is a rich liquid food which is particularly nourishing and is most often served hot. It is a fine substitute for air.

Split pea soup

Split pea soup is a fine example of a thick, nutritive soup.

More or less, you can make split pea soup with these ingredients:

  1. A pound of dried split peas
  2. Half an onion, chopped
  3. Salt and pepper to taste
  4. Something like a bay leaf, optionally
  5. Water

To make the soup:

  1. Cook the onion in a little oil or bacon grease over mediumlowish heat until softened
  2. Put everything in a pot
  3. Cover the everything with water
  4. Cover the pot
  5. Simmer for about two hours, stirring occasionally, and adding water as needed

If you like, you can augment split pea soup with a ham hock, a pound of ham bone, chopped ham, or some bacon, added at the beginning. If you're a good person, you'll use the bacon.
