You have found the repository of secret knowledge about how to run a game of Capture the Flag with Stuff. Actually, it's not secret, just obscure because only about a dozen or so people actually care about this. But those dozen should really know these things.

* Have a judge's meeting. This sounds obvious, but there have been semesters when it didn't happen. At the meeting, do things like get people's phone numbers, and go over tricky bits in the rules. Ideally, go over the entire rules, but really, nobody has that much patience. Maybe use this as a run-through for the rules presentation. Anyway, make sure the judges will actually know the rules before the game. That's usually a good thing, and doesn't always happen.
* Hand out wristbands at the door. Now that we don't have to worry about gender balance (goodbye, belt of chastity), we can hand them out randomly at the door. Try to hand out roughly equal numbers of each color, though it's probably a good idea to count before the first game anyway.
* Use a microphone. This will make anybody who has to talk much happier.
* Don't tell anybody, but it's okay if we lose a bit of stuff. Try to get it back, and get people to go fetch stuff if they know where it is. We have plenty of extra potions and wands, and can always make more. Moreover, typically stuff that is lost one game will be found the next game, since people will be looking around for flags and such. However, it's good to maintain the fiction that we actually care, since we don't want to lose too much, and people don't mind a break between games, anyway.

The theme is "Everything Good at KGB Science Labs" or some similar "headline". This is the case for the upper floor, which has demonstrations of various Scientific Phenomena, as well as the Game. The lower floor is then where the 1984-style Truth comes in, and everything collapses.

== Walkthrough ==

This is a rough outline of what a visitor to the Booth will see; hopefully it can be fleshed out to provide sufficient detail.

=== Outside ===

There are several windows into the Booth. One has a Jacob's ladder, as well as possibly other shiny things. This window is also visible at the top of the first staircase.

Another window can show off the theremin.

Other windows have other stuff.

The front has a headline, possibly fake text, and advertises KGB Science.

=== Entrance ===

The entrance to the booth is manned by a friendly robo-ceptionist, who gives some friendly greeting and invites visitors to see the wonders of Science.

Once inside, the visitors immediately proceed upstairs to the upper floor along a staircase festooned with posters/flyers giving vague Scientific Warnings (wear goggles, be careful with chemicals, do not feed the experiments...) and/or photographs of Successful Experiments.

=== Upper Floor ===

The upper floor is the Pinnacle of Science: there are various gadgets around.

In the middle wall, something is floating in a jar/vat/tank.

A theremin is on a table near the Game.

Towards the end of the floor, before going downstairs, there is a table with various Scientific Gadgets on it. These include potentially a plamsa ball, some chemical reactions, and a Jacob's Ladder. If we could find some linked gears, we would totally put them here.

=== Inner Stairs ===

After perusing the upper floor, visitors proceed to down a second staircase. This one also has attractive flyers, but they are somewhat disturbing, suggesting that KGB labs is playing with Great Powers that may Destroy Them.

=== Lower Floor ===

Here things have clearly gone wrong. Lighting may be poor, experiments are in disarray, creepy tentacles are pulling scientists into the ceiling.

The roboceptionist is visible again at the bottom of the stairs, but here has mutated into a disturbing robot, or has been destroyed by tentacles, or somesuch.

A scientist manikin (former zombie) is being pulled into the ceiling; other tentacles may be around.

An Electrical Panel is by the stairs, with odd labellings: (1, 2, 3, pizza, 5); a switch labeled Magic/More Magic, another labeled Nun/Hydralisk. A Giant Red Lever. An Awkward Button placed near the floor; a blinking red "Problem" Light higher up.

One alcove (under the stairs) has a Creature bumping against the glass.

The other alcove is walled off with warning tape and has Something To Be Determined behind it (allowing easy access to the adjacent Electrical Panel)

We want a design where just pushing various buttons or switches causes interesting things to happen. Ideas include a big red lever, the "Problem" light (like from Venture bros), a three-way switch and button for sci-fi sound effects, a green button that says "turn yellow button on" and a yellow button that says "turn green button off", and similar.

Glisson is working on this; there is a plan mocked out.

We want one. We want one for our booth. We want it to be low-tech and require neither upkeep nor too much power. We're thinking some sort of designed face with lights, and an mp3 player spewing friendly warnings/dire malfunctions. Nicole and Carolyn are thinking about this; please also think about this.

We want a bunch of failed experiments and other random electronics in the lower area. This will include the plasma ball and the hand-crank generator. We'd also gladly accept all donation of random interesting gadgety junk. Think structural piles of antique computer hardware.

Also, we'd like a few more (or many small) gadgets that do work and are shiny and nice-looking for the upper room display area. Especially at the moment we are thinking something with gears. It is possible to make a difference engine out of legos.

Current plans are to have this divided into two sections: ferrofluid and Archimedes screw/waterworks. The former will be in a sealed tank with magnets nearby on the table, for kids to move the magnets around and see the liquid respond. The idea is a suspension of iron filings in some liquid. The Archimedes screw idea is an open tank with an Archimedes screw in it which kids may turn; ideally this will drop water into some sort of interesting race. As yet this project is ownerless and could use some love.

Upstairs embedded in the wall we want two small tanks containing floaty creatures, evidently two ages of the same creature. They should be vaguely but not upsettingly tentacular. Downstairs will be a curtain of tentacles for people to push through and some hints that this is the same creature. Also a large tentacle pulling a scientist manikin into the ceiling. Signage to indicate that Martin is "still friendly."

=== Cage/Tank Alcove ===

Something alive and unnatural: either a big monster or many small ones and a fan. Goals: beady eyes, thumping on the glass, etc. Carolyn is working on designing some small creatures and would welcome input.

As yet unclaimed; we really need an idea that will take up maybe 3x3x7 feet of space.

=== First Staircase ===

We have a large amount of unclaimed hang space here; Carolyn thinks we should hang a large dodec or mobius strip (a la the MIT engineering library one) here.

We want one. We want one for our booth. We want it to be low-tech and require neither upkeep nor too much power. We're thinking some sort of designed face with lights, and an mp3 player spewing friendly warnings/dire malfunctions. Nicole and Carolyn are thinking about this; please also think about this.

=== Electronics and Gadgets ===

We want a bunch of failed experiments and other random electronics in the lower area. This will include the plasma ball and the hand-crank generator. We'd also gladly accept all donation of random interesting gadgety junk. Think structural piles of antique computer hardware.

Also, we'd like a few more (or many small) gadgets that do work and are shiny and nice-looking for the upper room display area. Especially at the moment we are thinking something with gears. It is possible to make a difference engine out of legos.

=== Upstairs Table ===

Current plans are to have this divided into two sections: ferrofluid and Archimedes screw/waterworks. The former will be in a sealed tank with magnets nearby on the table, for kids to move the magnets around and see the liquid respond. The idea is a suspension of iron filings in some liquid. The Archimedes screw idea is an open tank with an Archimedes screw in it which kids may turn; ideally this will drop water into some sort of interesting race. As yet this project is ownerless and could use some love.

Upstairs embedded in the wall we want two small tanks containing floaty creatures, evidently two ages of the same creature. They should be vaguely but not upsettingly tentacular. Downstairs will be a curtain of tentacles for people to push through and some hints that this is the same creature. Also a large tentacle pulling a scientist manikin into the ceiling. Signage to indicate that Martin is "still friendly."

Something alive and unnatural: either a big monster or many small ones and a fan. Goals: beady eyes, thumping on the glass, etc. Carolyn is working on designing some small creatures and would welcome input.

csjackso: Cedes control to Dom. Dress shoes made sad - got to campus, realized blisters. So after first presentation, walked home in socks, got different shoes.

dom: Lots of work, but Zelda is better than work. [yields control to dlstern].

dlstern: had a presentation, so wearing a suit, and a hat because it's awesome. Still have lots of stuff to do, but this is done. Not spending 8 hours in a room staring at a computer. Just need 10 pages, 5 pages, 5 pages, and screenplay.

lea/akiva: slept last night, it was great. Excited about the CMU mascot thing. Something should be done, involving a rally. [dlstern: Fuck you manatee]. Akiva has a picture of Plaidy McTartan. Like the carpet from Aladdin. Or a tartan-colored platty the playpus. Or Tristan (dyed hair plaid)

edanaher: No more homework, but grading and take home finals, so sad.

CtFWS: Glyphs being worked on. Can someone else take them to be laminated - Dom. Stuff is good, lots of potions, one watch clearly works, but doesn't get to the right mode, other than that, good. Printing: glyphs are covered, cheatsheets need to be printed (in andrew space?), rules need to be printed: ~10 copies for judges (csjackso), because they'll get lost. Flyers? Chalk where they're filming. Have flyer designs in AFS, some new ones. Some old ones in low resolution on the web site, but can just do last year's and Alan's new one. Want to flyer tonight. Rules Presentation: Akiva might have it, bgilbert would have the newest version. Mostly remember what was on the cheatsheets anyway, could probably reproduce.

Judging: 6 judges per round, plus head judge. csjackso can be The Head Judge. First game has overlap with Andrew Bird: first game: dlstern, edanaher, jgg, quuxom, Alan? Second round: dlstern, akiva, jgg, Quuxom, lea. Third: cpride, jgg, alan, quuxom, dom. Want a couple printouts of the judging schedule.

Next week CtfWS: Stuff is probably in pretty good shape. Needs writing on it. A call for summary set for each glyph based on it. Didn't lose any watches, check to see if any broke. Should check on stuff at the end of the meeting.

Bylaws: exec should read them, especially the bit about officers and elections. They should be more available - noone can find them, should be electing people based on what their jobs are. Should make it more obvious what the officer jobs are. Vagueness in responsibilities is good, but people should know what's there, and there are other things not in the bylaws. Maybe the week before nomcom, have officers explain what they do, so they actually exist. But it's better to have flexibility and people do what they can, as long as it's clear. Note that bylaws don't matter until things go wrong. Also need to do real transition meetings. And need to reappoint bylaws committee. So can dig up who it was before, get new people. Announce at meeting, post.

This week's event: Goth twister is coming along, decorations in the office, dlstern considering picking up decorations from Target. Need to ask him. Em has a music playlist for dancing room. Can split up food between rooms; chips candy and drinks. Trick-or-treating? The frame is encouraging trick-or-treaters, but wait until the event is winding down, which could be very late.

Booth: Em will send out an e-mail asking for suggestions for our theme, to go with Small Things Made Big. Pick themes either this week or next. So should have good ideas by the end of next meeting. Interesting part: looking at 3-sided booths. Didn't happen last year because too late, but six groups interested, so may be worked in. Have walkthrough, corners, possibly 3-sided. Probably don't want to do it, but can consider it.

Booth chairs: people who are most excited and interest/experience are all sophomores and freshman. Em/Dave both second semester seniors. Em not doing carnival committee, so could booth chair. Four or five very interested underclass, with Em/Dave for organizational knowledge, could take care of it, and a real group running it. Make creative/design and effort from them, Em/Dave keep stuff working well. (Bringing up booth because people had been asking what Booth/Carnival are, lots of freshmen interested in possibly chairing.) Meeting this weekend for chairs/themes? When would we pull out? Meeting after individual theme selection, final vote. Maybe go through plot/theme selection, decide what to do, then decide if it's worth doing. Issue of idea seeming good at the time, and inertia. One killer is collecting sacrifices to summon the elder god. One killer in exec, one has no connection to exec. One card could be ``you are a serial killer''. Or ``No really, you like rice crispies''. Or one is a serial killer, but not one of the killers. One exec, one not exec, and one card. Don't do the fake serial killer. Send the random killer to the dead people room. People should generate traits and secrets. Should have icebreakers. Circle of fun.

Storytelling committee: on fire. Eastern Pennsylvania has a thing for coal. A fair amount of high quality coal. Many towns prospered on it. In the late 60's, a town called Centralia. Fire in the town dump, nobody cared, fire burned. Bureaucratic: someone should put that out. Too late, people noticed that a seam of coal had come up, and risen to ground under the dump, so the coal was on fire. So, you, over there... It'll go out. A year later... it'll go out... for the 70's, Centralia was a town with a fire under it. Underground, no problems. In 1984, crevesses opening up, roads breaking up, plants dying. Federal government: we'll buy you out: we'll buy your property, eventually buy whole town. Government gives you money, you take stuff, then backfill everything, lay down sod. People stayed because they had some rights to the coal underneath them, waiving by leaving. Today: there are three houses left, a general store, but sidewalk, street signs still there. So entire town plan full of empty grass lots, well tended by the federal government.

Storytelling committee: Tomorrow is Halloween, so a ghost story. But need bonfires, fire here might be a bad idea. Growing up in Connecticut in 80's,90's. I-84 comes south and west from Hartford, into clover leaf to 9. When in high school (no math), 9 hadn't been connected yet, had to go through Farmington, wealthy people with nice houses, didn't like highway. But got scrapped after bridges. So for a while drove down road with empty bridges over them. High school students on them, but didn't see them because they were careful. People were EMT's, pyrophiles. Could walk south off of cloverleaf, get to overpass where brush, trees, piled. Not built up because supposed to be highway. So good place for bonfire. One night had a food 12-foot flame, 6-foot fire going, a friend pulls out propane, asks what would happen if it went in the bonfire. Then had to do it. Everyone else went away, then he ran away too, looking over shoulder to not miss it. Bonfire keeps burning, nothing happens. A car started coming, wonders about going down and checking on it. Then huge ball of fire, wonder what the people in the car thought: hit the bottom of the bridge and branched. So right as they hit the bridge... Now have bonfire, can make ghost story.

Some time ago, in midwest, was a woman who was a local affiliate news anchor, with a huge problem: overattenuated blush response. Don't understand it, deep voodoo magic in the nervous system. So would become embarrassed, blush, more embarrassed. Pancake makeup didn't work; she didn't look human. Hypnotherapy didn't help, so got pushed later and later, didn't work out. Discovered there was an experimental procedure: two nerves go from spine, over shoulder blades. Control sweating above the waist. lower heart rate, and stem the blush response. So she tried it, and it worked. Just fine for three days, then got depressed and quit the station: she was no longer becoming embarrassed, not the same person. In radio now, doing much better.

akiva: after last week, heard a lot of people interested in alternatives, came up with huge list in a half hour. Lots of awesome ideas, suggest that we do these things instead of booth. Could do booth and some of these things, but booth takes a lot of energy, and care/will/space in cage is used up by Booth, so suggest not bothering with booth. Also pink hats for $4. Also, started working on one of the projects: have a bunch of plaster posts to go on top of the fence. Can do stuff without a deadline!

dlstern: first, feel like if we want to, a lot of those things could be done at the same time as booth, but would probably be served best as an organization by taking a year off, making internal improvements, organization, cage inventory, preliminary planning for booth next year.

Em: that was a good point, been in discussion, hasn't happened. Before voting to not do booth, in the organization's interest to find out what the theme is: problem with past years is that we've done off things with the theme, didn't impress judges or people. If it's a good theme, maybe do booth anyway because we won't get another good the for a while.

May have noticed snow today. Having lived here since 1990, come to some conclusions on how to deal with winters. Cold, but not cold enough to be dry. So if walking around outside, walking through slush, or on ice which breaks into slush ankle-deep. How to deal with it: wool socks. Keep feet warm, keep feet warm when wet with icy water. More wind than you think. So wear something wind proof. Please buy a good hat.

Storytelling/Challah bread. Many reasons to go to Italy, one to go to France. One for Italy is to stand six feet inside a building in Florence: as far away from the Baptistry as it is tall - in 1415, someone painting a painting right there. He was an architect and sculptor, not painter. The first time anyone used perspective to paint a picture. Unfortunately, put a visitor's center there, so it doesn't work so well. One reason to visit France: in the Cathedral at Chartres, a little before, the people who built it put a pattern in tile on the floor, one pattern was a labyrinth. Not a maze, just one path, but trick is to follow it. Christian reason: oriented W-E, so approaching and receding the altar. Pilgrims had sticks - three hour masses, no sticks. Put in chairs 16th century, decided labyrinth was Pagan. Remained until 1995, when labyrinth enthusiasts from Southern California got on a plane, went there. Two stayed in the cafe across the street. Other 38 went into cathedral, calmly, respectfully picked up chairs, moved off to side, each walked the labyrinth, bishop is bemused, put the chairs back, thanked the bishop, and walked out. Now at the cathedral, every Friday, noon-5 take the chairs off the labyrinth. Also, this campus could use a labyrinth.

dlstern: booth is part of spring carnival. Booth, buggy. Build a booth, a game, people wander in. A large time commitment, money, largest item on budget. Generally $2000-3000, though can be less if enough wood reused. Lots of fun.

lea: Against. Bad idea to do booth this year: not every year, maybe every other/third year. Tend to do booth because a couple people are graduating and want to do it. It's a large time commitment, makes a lot of people sad. It costs a lot of money. Not a lot of money is cobbled together. Spending of money on booth is done stupidly: a couple people in charge don't know how much something should cost, waste money. Lots of people end up sad. Also not very KGB-ish. lots of rules/restrictions. Even with crazy theme, building to spec, playing by rules, bureaucracy. Could do better things with money and time. Like deadline, so stuff gets finished. Other things to do (during carnival?) Could put on play, bake cake the size of Hamerschlag. Could build labyrinth in cut. Could do things for community/small children that are fun, but not necessarily booth.

em: KGB booths have been amazing in the past. A good way to get to know people, working together. There have been reasons for people to want to be cynical. But has a lot to do with the fact that a lot of people went into it cynically. Only worth doing if you want to do something that looks good. It's worth hearing the bitter voices, but could also be amazing.

akiva: last years booth was awesome, did the last five years, but cool to take something off, maybe do something different. Done a lot of booths, not bitter.

dlstern: Last year's was a lot of work, points of lacking people, but a lot of fun, people working on it were proud of it. Liked how it came out. Addressing every year bit: last time KGB won was a two-year operation: one year planning, next year built. Nervous that not doing booth would lead to loss of experience. So if not doing booth, would like to help transmit booth knowledge.

Shawn: perhaps vote yes, continue to discuss, then pull out if necessary?

glissen: if we did booth, how much does financial commitment affect other abilities?

em: Really doesn't. Hasn't affected standard day-to-day things for years. Have more than enough, can still run booths. Have had points in the past where couldn't buy booths for events. But for other elaborate projects, could be not enough. Received with 3k, up to 6k before booth, tended to bounce around there. Peaking at 4k due to t-shirt oops, but getting back up there.

Alan: Helped out with booth. Not a CMU student, so can't do stuff on midway. Also, not currently voting because broke. But started off getting quietly dragged into booth planning beginning of last semester. Dropped out due to frustration, got reinvolved. Found it extremely fun and rewarding, with caveats that took up time, destroyed health, new relationship abruptly fell apart. Can be incredibly fun. Can be nerve-wracking/frustrating. Both within five minutes. last year's booth was designed by committee: a lot of awesome, a lot of oh, this is what we've got. A lot of things we forgot at the end, underscoring planning and required long-term commitment. At the end of it, SSA, TSA, ASA win, we get nothing. It is what happens every year.

Em: discussions of whether to break independents into groups of volunteer versus groups that tend to require/ask members to help out. Winning tends to encourage people to come back. Probably won't happen. Carnival is viewed by carnival/midway committees as a service to the community. Little kids, students come through, look at booths, that's the fun part.

lea: back to comment on experience graduating: again, bitter, it's a good thing. A lot of experiences have been people with experience get final say, younger people are grunt labor. Never have a dearth of qualified people (tech in high school). Don't necessarily need direct passing.

dlstern: disagree. Came from theater tech background, then two-time chair. But construction and specific booth knowledge are different. Also issue of organization not passing down the knowledge.

Alan: Leading up to: if we're going to do a booth, want to have a booth that will win something, even if just oohs and aahs. It should be good.

Em: To offset what lea said: experience depends a lot on who's running things, how things are working. Freshman year: was handed a drill the first day, told to fix stuff in the corner. Make them tetris peices. Not that low on labor. Could have done stuff with all seniors, but it was you take it and figure it out. Not always the case in later years. Had issues of things like designing the roof like computer graphics, not wood. Also freshman interested, could make experience less important. Reasons for not winning: choosing themes that are fun but tend to be a bit outside. Like judges didn't know what tetris was. After that, Victorian pseudo-science and zombies on Roanoke island. Lots of fun, but maybe that's why we don't score so well.

Messing around in boats part three. Before, bringing stuff back would use Dutch sailing ships, throw one to pirates, the rest get away. Now we throw things in big standardized shipping containers. put them on big slow ships. Still have pirates, but generally get boat going into port slowly. Go to one particular container, take it. Captain and crew watch it occur: insurance covers it, and the guys usually have automatic weapons. Straights of Malacca: cuts 220 miles of trip from China to west, but have to go really slow, and guys keep taking stuff. Ship going through, guys on boat, climb up, then take bridge, hold everybody hostage for about an hour, then they leave. Nothing taken, noone hurt. Apparently practice.
