Winter Palace
The Booth of Carnival 2003

== Story ==
The Winter Palace was left to be guarded by young men and boys from the Bolsheviks during the revolution. Unfortunately, the Bolsheviks came signaling their attack with a red lantern. And the guard... ran away leading to an exceptionally successful and bloodless attack. [[mam5]] totally told this story awesomely.

== Structure ==
This was a 1.5 story booth with a balcony, gold encrusted columns, chandeliers, and fabrige eggs. There was a lovely parlour, with golden chairs and candle sticks, and arching doorways, but the roof left a bit to be desired. [[epr]] chaired. [[kconnors]] and [[col]] were the undergoddesses of the interior.

== Game ==
We were going to attack the winter palace KGB style, using lasers! The kiddies get to move around mirrors to bounce the light around trees rocks, and a train! When the laser hit the target on the palace mockup, all the windows lit with red leds and the attack was a success.

Unfortunately, the bouncing light was a little much for the toddlers to understand and the red leds didn't always light.

== Controversy ==
One late night, members left the crimson tapestries out to dry from the fire proofing. Lo, the day midway opened, [[ASA]]'s booth Rome had the cloth covering the banisters! The Carnival Committee elected to do nothing since there was no police report.

[[Category:Booth]]

[[Snegurochka's Castle]] was KGB's [[2001 Officers|2002]] [[Carnival]] [[Booth]], themed after the Russian fairy tale of <i>Снегурочка</i>, the snow maiden. It took fourth place in the independent category.

==History and Organization==

Embittered over close and not-so-close defeats in recent years, KGB decided to skip Booth in 2001. Four-year turnover and a large infusion of new blood in 2000 meant that by the next year, well over half the organization had never participated in a booth; the decision was finalized when [[CorSec]] [[teki|Sean "Teki" Dobbs]] volunteered to serve as [[booth chair|Booth Chair]]. Ultimate responsibility for the booth was never quite clear: there was some sort of crazed power-sharing system which purported to split the responsibility between construction (Teki and [[User:johnson6|Mym]]) and visual design ([[kconnors]] and [[mid]], who were roommates at the time), and [[Cclark|Dred Uncle Pennybags]] holding the purse-strings, but the lines of authority were blurry, and communication was poor. As a result, some design decisions were made by last-minute fiat on Midway, and these frequently did not agree with earlier plans; examples include the decision to paint the interior of the booth to resemble castle-stones and the failure to implement an attractive interior for the tower.

==Story==

The character of <i>snegurochka</i> (the snow maiden) appears in several traditional Russian fairy tales; as a folk tale, of course, there is no single traditional telling, but nearly all versions result in her melting somehow. Since we hadn't chosen a canonical version of the story yet, and since it was clear that this would be of moderate importance to the booth, [[rjmccall]] decided to write one. The result was a bit long, and the judges evidently didn't believe that we told the story to whoever came by, but we really did make an effort to do so; Nat Manista was the prince of this. The story can be read [http://www.contrib.andrew.cmu.edu/~rjmccall/snegurochka.html here].

==Structure and Design==
[[Image:Snegurochka_Plans.gif|thumb|One of the many CAD views created while planning the Castle]]

The booth was meant to resemble a castle enclosed in a snow-globe. Structurally, it featured a 15-foot circular tower (diameter ~6ft, height ~15ft, conical ceiling) in the rear-left corner. A straight line of steps led up through an enclosed hallway to the tower from the "street", and uncovered steps then led down along the rear and right walls into the courtyard. The right wall of the booth gently curved over to become the front wall of the booth, and the exit door was set in the center of the curve. The courtyard was paved with a layer of white gravel directly upon the asphalt; a "dome" of copper piping supporting a thin cloth mesh rose up from the courtyard walls and enclosed the entire space (except the tower). The structural components of the booth were "adapted" from the previous year's Fringe (?) booth, though of course they were built from scratch. I believe KGB no longer has any of the curved wall sections, although some of the flat wall sections remain in the cage and still see use in booths; these can be distinguished by the various Russian names (predominantly feminine)* written inside them as identification, as well as by their thin paneling, which is considerably lighter than the plywood used for most wall sections. Sections of stairs from the Castle also remain and have been extensively reused.

<nowiki>*</nowiki>Fun Fact: [[Natalya]], a sturdy, straight, and loyal piece of 2x4 was still being used as structural wood in 2011 for [[The Phantom Tollbooth]].

The entire exterior of the booth was painted to resemble a castle; this was done by giving the walls a simple base coat, then sponge-painting rocks and mortar onto the surface in several shades of grey. The technique (which actually used scraps of paper towel rather than sponges) was proposed by [[lmarsh]]; it was carried out mostly by [[rjmccall]] with various assistants. The effect was reasonably nice for the exterior of the castle, if somewhat muted and labor-intensive; however, the decision to paint the interior of the courtyard in the same style was probably a mistake, carried out mostly because time was running short and no-one on Midway knew how to paint anything better. Additionally, the entire exterior of the booth was painted, even the wall which faced another booth (KGB's plot was at the end of a single row, so painting the other walls was conceivably justified). The interior of the entrance hallway was lined with a dark fabric and was (as I recall) somewhat claustrophobic. The interior of the tower was painted in several coats of primer, but never (I believe) given a real coat of paint, and the ceiling and stairs were not completely painted before [[Midway]] opened; the intent was that there would be extensive decorations here, but they were not completed in time. All of this I bring up, not to lay individual fault anywhere, but to drive home the importance of planning and communication.

The roof was covered in tar paper, which was obnoxious to lay, obnoxious to keep in place, and extremely attractive (for a roof). Take this as you will.

The design document submitted to Carnival Committee for Snegurochka's Castle contained the second-most number of CAD drawings out of all the booths that year – with the most being for a blitz booth.

==Game==

The game was a 5x5 grid of square blocks; blocks in the second and fourth rows and columns could slide freely, and at any given time there were several (one?) free blocks not on the board. Blocks were marked with paths connecting two or three of the edges, and the goal was to create a clear path from one corner of the grid to the opposite corner. Players had either two or three moves (for adults and children, respectively), each of which consisted of pushing a free block in any orientation along one of the sliding rows, which would then cause a block to fall off the other end, producing a new free block. This game was adapted from a toy puzzle game whose name escapes me.

==Worksong==

A traditional worksong, penned by an anonymous laborer on Snegurochka's Castle, has come down to us in part; some of the lyrics have been irrevocably lost, at least until they're found again. The song begins thus:

Now I've got scalene triangles on my shoulders,
And my friend is carrying a trapezoid.
This was a literal, physical, giant television that visitors could go inside to see how a TV actually worked.

==Overview==
[[Capture the Flag with Stuff]] is one of [[KGB]]'s flagship [[:category:events|events]]. Held semesterly, the event regularly draws over one hundred [[students]], [[non-students]], and [[alumni]].

* [http://www.cmukgb.org/activities/ctfws.php Rules]
* [[CtFwS Judge's Secrets]]

Capture the Flag with Stuff was created by KGB alumnus Andrew Plotkin, who famously does work in interactive fiction and game design.

==Versions at Other Institutions==
Capture the Flag with Stuff has been played at other universities and institutions, often with consultation from CMU KGB members on how to adapt rules to better suit their facilities or players. Adoption for other campuses has traditionally resulted in hilarity and creativity which enriches the game.

===CtFwS in the Park===
[http://ctfwsinthepark.com/rules.html CtFwSitP] is essentially the same game, except it has been scaled for outdoor play, by fewer players, in a park (specifically Golden Gate Park where many CMU and KGB alumni live near after graduating).

===Harvard University===
[http://www.hrsfa.org/photos/lotze/ctfws/harvard-rules2.html Harvard University's variation] differs from KGB's in some major ways. They include a category of White items, but their color scheme in general is not as dichotomous as KGB's (red items are typically for offense, blue for defense, and green are special items in the KGB's rules). Also, the concept of charging is majorly changed, in that, items tend to have a single charge per game or much longer recharge periods. The issue of Stuff becoming useless is then mitigated by the inclusion of a glyph which recharges items, included below. Major additions or changes to particular pieces of Stuff include:
* '''The Long Wand of the Law (red)''': A deprecated item in KGB's rules, the Long Wand of the Law allows a player to extend his reach, presumably for easier capture of opponents. The wand does not count as an extension of the body for being tagged by others or for being whapped by other magical wands.
* '''The Wand of Snoozing (green)''': This wand is the same as KGB's Stun Wand but with a better name.
* '''The Dispel Wand (white)''': Essentially the same as KGB's identically-named wand except for the color change from blue to white and a few rules changes. 1) A simultaneous whap with another Dispel Wand dispels both users Stuff. In addition, a piece of Stuff may be dispelled to become a "mundane piece of foam"
* '''The Bribe Potion (red)''': Replacing the [[Ninja Potion]] from KGB rules, this potion may be given by a captive to a captor in exchange for "free-backs".
* '''The Truth Serum/Potion (blue)''': The jailer uses this potion to ask the six questions, instead of having this power at all times. Each blue potion may only be used once every 15 minutes.
* '''The Potion of Lubrication (white)''': The [[Key Potion]] from KGB's rules is split into two potions in Harvard's rules; the Potion of Lubrication allows a jailed player (and one jailed friend) to escape from jail by handing the potion to the jailer, who must take it. The green Key Potion (which Harvard refers to as the Jolt! Potion) retains its color in their version and is used only for becoming unstunned.
* '''The Belt of Twofer (red)''': Similar to the blue Belt of Doc-Oct, the wearer may capture up to two captives. The belt is activated by capturing one player and then yelling the key-phrase, "Twofer!" at any point before reaching the jail. The key-phrase which compels the first captive to sit down and await either the wearer to capture a second captive or one minute to pass.
* '''Goombah's Belt of Humiliating Protection (green)''': Essentially the same, except for the suggestion of singing the Super Mario Bros. theme song (which sort of makes more sense, given the belt name). Also, the wearer and anyone chained to her may not carry other magical items.
* '''The Glyph of Charging (Still Going)''': Stuff may be touched to this glyph to regain a charge. Unlike other glyphs, this glyph is available to any player regardless of team affiliation.
* '''The Glyph of Entrancement (Gotcha)''': This glyph is similar to KGB's identically-named glyph, except for 1) the glyph only works if you are within 10 feet and 2) those who see opponent glyphs are stunned for 10 minutes.
* '''The Glyph of the Net (Thanks)''': If an player sees the opponent's Glyph of the Net and is within 10 feet of it, the player is compelled to leave one magical item at the glyph. Magical items left in this way may not be picked up and returned to play.

Here are [http://flickrhivemind.net/Tags/ctfws/Interesting some pictures] of CtFwS being played at Harvard.

[http://web.mit.edu/anime/Showing-Announcements/2003/2003-01-24 These minutes] from the MIT Anime Club imply that MIT students were also in attendance.

===University of Glasgow===
The University of Glasgow Science Fiction and Fantasy Society (popularly referred to as Io) ran a small game of Capture the Flag with Stuff and later emailed the [[2009 Officers]] to tell tales of their adventures. The email is transcribed below:

Dear KGB,
<br> While looking around this summer for activities for the members of
Glasgow University Science Fiction and Fantasy Society (known as Io, for
reasons), I happened upon the CMU KGB website, and the rules of the game
of Capture the Flag with Stuff, which I promptly decided to steal.
However, I thought that you might be interested to know something of our
experiences playing the game, which took place yesterday evening,
Wednesday the last of September.
<br> The venue was the two main quads of the University, which are connected
by gothic cloisters some ten metres in diameter. I was aware that
playing outside would cause problems; in particular the Glyph of the
Disgusting Doorknob was absolutely useless for both teams. I wracked my
brain trying to think of an indoor venue that would allow us to run
around and wreak general havoc within, but none could be found. Playing
after nightfall, albeit in well-lit surroundings, also made things
interesting. Telling blue Stuff from green Stuff was a particular challenge.
<br> In spite of the above circumstances, the ten players we managed to

Capture the Flag with Stuff was created by KGB alumnus Andrew Plotkin, who famously does work in interactive fiction and game design.

==Versions at Other Institutions==
Capture the Flag with Stuff has been played at other universities and institutions, often with consultation from CMU KGB members on how to adapt rules to better suit their facilities or players. Adoption for other campuses has traditionally resulted in hilarity and creativity which enriches the game.

===CtFwS in the Park===
[http://ctfwsinthepark.com/rules.html CtFwSitP] is essentially the same game, except it has been scaled for outdoor play, by fewer players, in a park (specifically Golden Gate Park where many CMU and KGB alumni live near after graduating).

===Harvard University===
===University of Glasgow===

<br> In spite of the above circumstances, the ten players we managed to
gather seemed to have fun, with play closing after an hour with a score
of 3-0 to the yellow team.
[[Capture the Flag with Stuff]] is one of [[KGB]]'s flagship [[:category:events|events]]. Held semesterly, the event regularly draws over one hundred [[students]], [[non-students]], and [[alumni]].

* [http://www.cmukgb.org/activities/ctfws.php Rules]
* [[CtFwS Judge's Secrets]]

Capture the Flag with Stuff was created by KGB alumnus Andrew Plotkin, who famously does work in interactive fiction and game design.

==Versions at Other Institutions==
Capture the Flag with Stuff has been played at other universities and institutions, often with consultation from CMU KGB members on how to adapt rules to better suit their facilities or players. Adoption for other campuses has traditionally resulted in hilarity and creativity which enriches the game.

===Harvard University===

===University of Glasgow===

<br> In spite of the above circumstances, the ten players we managed to
gather seemed to have fun, with play closing after an hour with a score
of 3-0 to the yellow team.
<br> You may, therefore, be pleased to know that the game has invaded
Scotland, and I definitely intend to run it again, probably in a better
location.
<br> With my regards,
* '''The Glyph of Entrancement (Gotcha)''': This glyph is similar to KGB's identically-named glyph, except for 1) the glyph only works if you are within 10 feet and 2) those who see opponent glyphs are stunned for 10 minutes.
* '''The Glyph of the Net (Thanks)''': If an player sees the opponent's Glyph of the Net and is within 10 feet of it, the player is compelled to leave one magical item at the glyph. Magical items left in this way may not be picked up and returned to play.

===University of Glasgow===

<br> In spite of the above circumstances, the ten players we managed to
gather seemed to have fun, with play closing after an hour with a score
of 3-0 to the yellow team.
<br> You may, therefore, be pleased to know that the game has invaded
Scotland, and I definitely intend to run it again, probably in a better
location.
<br> With my regards,
<br> Josy Shewell Brockway
Games Convenor
Society of Io

Josy also included a link to their wiki, which is no longer in use [www.lordofthemoon.com/iowiki]. However, Io is still alive and well according to their Facebook group [www.facebook.com/groups/lordofthemoon/]
Capture the Flag with Stuff was created by KGB alumnus Andrew Plotkin, who famously does work in interactive fiction and game design.

==Versions at Other Institutions==
Capture the Flag with Stuff has been played at other universities and institutions, often with consultation from CMU KGB members on how to adapt rules to better suit their facilities or players. Adoption for other campuses has traditionally resulted in hilarity and creativity which enriches the game.

==Harvard University==
Harvard University's variation (www.hrsfa.org/photos/lotze/ctfws/harvard-rules2.html ) differs from KGB's in some major ways.
* '''The Bribe Potion (red)''': Replacing the Ninja Potion from KGB rules, this potion may be given by a captive to a captor in exchange for "free-backs".
* '''The Truth Serum/Potion (blue)''': The jailer uses this potion to ask the six questions, instead of having this power at all times. Each blue potion may only be used once every 15 minutes.
* '''The Potion of Lubrication (white)''': The Key Potion from KGB rules is split into two potions in Harvard rules; the Potion of Lubrication allows a jailed player (and one jailed friend) to escape from jail by handing the potion to the jailer, who must take it.
This work of brilliance took the classic story of Rumplestiltskin and added funk music to it to fit the theme of Fractured Fairytales. Unused ideas included The Frog Prince of Bel Air <s>and Baba Yaga's Smut</s>. It took second place in the independent category.
==Notable features==

*Electrical was finished by Sunday<br>
*A sloped roof <br>
*Game which involved throwing golf balls into holes in a table to produce musical notes. There was an easy mode (Smoke On the Water) and hard mode (<s>Fallen Angel by Poison</s> no fucking clue)<br>
*An "outdoor" area where one of the walls of the room was left to the open air, included a fire escape, bike rack with shitty bike, and a chain link fence<br>
*Night club with psychedelic art that glowed under a blacklight, a full bar, and a life size version of Funkelstiltskin himself in 3D. It kind of looked like [[twright]] had a baby with Michael Jackson. It even had a sound system

==Things Learned==
Having plastic roofing or a completely open wall provides a lot of natural light, making electrical duties a little easier.
Emily was raised by herons on the banks of the Ohio River in Cincinnati. There she learned the secrets of all tongues, developing communication skills in English, Latin, Heron, Russian, Morse, Binary, Dvorak, and many more. She can communicate with darn-near anything, save for the elusive cucumber which has always treated her with disdain.

Feeling it was finally time to leave the nest, she migrated north along the river until it split and she found herself in Pittsburgh. Now she roams freely (on all four knees), equipped with only a trombone, a stuffed moose, and her own observational skills.

If you gaze into her eyes, you will notice they are two different colors. However, as soon as you look away, they are the same indeterminate shade of grey.
It is very important to ACTUALLY KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING when spackling a booth. If you simply give a bucket of spackle to [[Creidieki]], and tell him "figure out what to do with this", you will not Win Booth. Particularly if he then enlists all of the freshmen.

=About=
Puzzle Hunt is a puzzle hunt, that is an interactive event for people who want to complete puzzles and logic test. The PuzzleHuntCMU group's variety is usually a day-long event for teams of 2-5 that incorporates logic puzzles as well as a plot and sometimes interactive puzzles. It often takes Way Too Long but is also Lots Of Fun. It occurs roughly every semester.

=History of Affiliation with KGB=
Puzzle Hunt was originally a KGB event. It was written and produced by members, pizza lunch and props were sponsored by KGB dollars, and mostly KGB members participated. As the event became more well-known on campus though, non-members made up a larger group of participants. In the 2008-2009 range, some KGB members believed that KGB should no longer be associated with Puzzle Hunt while others saw no reason to deny them funding. This small issue of funding responsibilities was eventually resolved in Fall 2011 when Facebook offered to sponsor the event.

Since then, the hunt has been sponsored by Facebook and Dropbox in various semesters. The staff and participants are still largely (though not solely) comprised of KGB members, and the Puzzle Hunt planning wiki still exists on KGB's website. The event is un-officially run by a group which adopted the name PuzzleHuntCMU on Facebook and is not a CMU-recognized organization.

=About=
Puzzle Hunt is a puzzle hunt, that is an interactive event for people who want to complete puzzles and logic test.
