On the Anniversary Party page, Jay says "The Saturday lunch is the big event. If you can only attend one, please come to the lunch." IMHO, this turned out not to be the case. Friday night was the big event for me. (Nearly) everybody was there, and I got to see everybody; it was big and fluid and open. Saturday was a day of getting together in small groups for longer periods of time. (--zarf)

(To be clear: it was very good that the big open event was first and the lunch was second. I would just bill Friday as the shindig and Saturday as the followup.)

Friday Pizza Event
Friday officer reports went on a little long -- as I said, I was more in the mood to circulate chaotically. But obviously if they had been shunted to Saturday, then Saturday would have gone on way too long. Maybe would have been better if just the presidents had given individual reports, and the other officer cadres had had collective goofiness to present. (--zarf)

Ran out of bottled water early. I think it was non-diet soda that was left over.

Snacks were heavily overbought; but they made their way to the con suite on Saturday, and the leftovers from that are being trucked to campus for the next regular KGB meeting. (Or booth teardown?) So no problem there.

Saturday Luncheonus
Committee reports were excellent. Long, but in no sense too long, because all the presenters were good and the longer presenters were terrific. (--zarf)

After 2:00, a lot of people formed a lot of plans for what to do next. Chaotic. I stuck in Goob's company, and he was somewhat tuned into both the older and younger crowds; but not everybody is. It might have been good to have a big chart-paper up for people to write "Hey! Party over here!" "Bunch of us going out to dinner over there!" Etc. On the other hand, perhaps people wanted to plan for tighter groups. I only raise the issue because I really enjoyed the cross-generational aspect of the weekend. (--zarf)

* There were an associated game of CTFWS.
* The party were held on a cruise ship in some exotic location.
* We Defectors created a blitz booth.
* A variety of ancient and revered KGB artifacts could be assembled and displayed.
** Images of any and all KGB silliness need to be preserved for posterity in the KGB's nifty new flickr account created by so0s and growing exponentially in popularity.
** The original five-minute booth -- the one made of styrofoam.
** The original KGB buggy can be recreated from its original Legos courtesy of rm3t and so0s
** Dan Lovinger still has a "Topple the Czar" figure, I think.
** Somewhere, I (ee0r) may still have a FL0M B0MB.
* There were showings of KGB: The Movie and its sequel(s).
* Some accommodation were made for those defectors who (scary as this is) have small and infant children.
* We played Kremlin.
* There was a showing of sock puppets on fire
* Some detail-obsessive people took notes on all the stories and history that surface, and threw them up onto this wiki afterward. Not blackmail material -- necessarily -- but officer lists, booth chairmanships, what the booths were...

But obviously if they had been shunted to Saturday, then Saturday would have gone on ``way`` too long.

So no problem there.

Saturday Luncheonus
Committee reports were excellent. Long, but in no sense *too* long, because all the presenters were good and the longer presenters were terrific.

On the other hand, perhaps people *wanted* to plan for tighter groups. (--zarf)

A nefarious plot has been hatched among the defectors to overthrow KGB's control of its annual Carnival party in 2008 and throw a somewhat grander shindig to commemorate the 20th Anniversary of KGB's founding.

Zarf:

Scotland Yard was a student-run cafe sort of place in Skibo, back when there was a Skibo. The place was noisy, cramped, and not that well lit. But it had several positive points:

A lot of CMU memorabilia. Notably a life-sized "Wild Thing" from a "Where the Wild Things Are" Carnival booth. (Whose booth?)

A large booth in the middle. Not a Carnival booth, a restaurant seating booth. It was this bizarre square gazebo thing in the middle of the Yard. You could fit an awful lot of KGB members in there, if they were all skinny undergrads.

Bread, Fruit, and Cheese. This was by Zog a loaf of bread, with some sliced apples and (I think) port-wine cheese food spread substance. An excellent value in calories for your ruble.

Nachos. A nachos platter. By "platter", I mean "chips and stuff, microwaved and served on a styrofoam plate". The cheese would melt into the styrofoam and form a toxic crust that you would pick off and eat anyway.

Panther Hollow is a ravine of sorts that runs between CMU and University of Pittsburgh. It is so called because of a yearly holiday event that took place there. The taxidermied skins of the native Allegheny Panther were brought in, stuffed with candy, and hung from trees while local children battered them, blindfolded, for fun and profit. The railway currently running through Panther Hollow now made this event more difficult and, subsequently, its popularity declined.

If you follow Panther Hollow down past CMU, you will enter the Land of the Lost. There is topologically no room for that neighborhood between Pitt and Schenley Park. It's true! It exists in a fold of space-time. People live there, but you never see their eyes.

It is very important to ACTUALLY KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING when spackling a booth. If you simply give a bucket of spackle to Creidieki, and tell him "figure out what to do with this", you will not Win Booth. Particularly if he then enlists all of the freshmen.

Anyway, after you spackle something, you wait for it to dry, and then you sand over it, and then you paint it. Casual afterthought is then used to construct a roof and cover it in tar paper. Roof construction is oft-considered the best time of year to identify which KGB members are load bearing.

All of this might be fun, if it didn't cost more than KGB has spent on anything else, ever. That small detail guarantees fun.

A nefarious plot has been hatched among the defectors to overthrow KGB's control of its annual Carnival party in 2008 and throw a somewhat grander shindig to commemorate the 20th Anniversary of KGB's founding. Jay Laefer is coordinating a list of people who would like to receive more party information via email. The rest of us will get our information here.
The Plan
Basic planning tasks:
* Gather contact information.
* Pick a date, probably during Carnival (April 17-20, 2008).
* Book a venue.
* Obtain funds.

The Central Committee
* S.E. Olson
* Tim Showalter

The Brainstorming List
It would be totally keen if:

* The party were held someplace near campus to make travel between Midway and the party easy.
* The party were held someplace where real food could be served or possibly provided.
* The party were held someplace that a full range of beverages could be served.
* We had custom KGB pocket protectors as favors.
* We played Kremlin.
* There was a showing of sock puppets on fire
* Some detail-obsessive people took notes on all the stories and history that surface, and threw them up onto this wiki afterward. Not blackmail material -- necessarily -- but officer lists, booth chairmanships, what the booths were...

So what about…
So what about having the party in The Underground? It's right near Midway, serves food and beverages, has some comfy seating, and plenty of room. A bunch of us alumni hung out there once during Carnival and it was OK. The food was OK (Gullifty's menu), but nothing special. The party could supply appetizers, drinks, some entrees like salads or sandwiches. No alcohol, probably, but maybe that would be OK if everything else was acceptable. The main "pros" are proximity and atmosphere. Also, if KGB reserves it, it's probably free. The main "cons" are that it's on campus and has no connected outdoor area.--Eeyore 09:14, 11 May 2007 (EDT)

:I'd rather do something located off-campus and with alcohol available, but those are preferences. Logistically, I'm concerned about what hours we could hold the event at The Underground, as well as whether it can accomodate the 100-150 people I'm hoping will attend. --Laefer 16:19, 11 May 2007 (EDT)
