Diskette day, or Floppy Disk Night, was a real football game where, on Sept. 19th, 1987, CMU Sports Information Director Bruce Gerson attempted to boost attendance for a football game by offering free diskettes for the first 400 student attendees.
The game in question was an Academic Bowl game, CMU vs Case Western, and favorable sources claim that the diskettes made the game much more memorable, with higher attendance, and disks being thrown onto the field in celebration of touchdowns. Less favorable sources (Sports Illustrated) mocked the attempt, claiming it made no significant change to attendance. Regardless, it at least made its legacy in the Underground Tour, and can be referenced in old editions of the Tartan (Vol 82, Iss 4).
