Units are the units by which CMU classes are measured. Most colleges and universities give each course a value in "credits". Credits usually represent the number of hours each week that a student in that course will spend in class. CMU however, uses "units", which are sometimes advertised as the number of hours each week that a student in that course will spend both attending class and doing work related to the course. A course at another institution that would be "worth" 3 credits is worth 9 units at CMU. The naive will assume that "units" are merely 3 times the number of credits. That is probably wrong. One might also naively assume that "units" will actually correspond to the amount of work one will put in each week. That is almost certainly wrong.
